| Two Notable Masons in Markham |
John Graves Simcoe, the first Governor of Upper Canada, was a Mason.
Another Mason to have had a great influence on our early history was William (Moll) Berczy, an artist, writer, former Army Officer in Europe, who recruited immigrants in Germany, sailed with them from Hanover , landed at Philadelphia, led them first to the Genessee Valley of New York, thence through the bush to Niagara and around the West end of Lake Ontario by land to Markham in 1794.

| The Name Markham Union Lodge |
Several theories exist as to the reasons for the name Markham Union Lodge. 1.It has been suggested that the word ‘Union’ is an abbreviation for the word ‘Unionville ’, the hamlet in which the Lodge was located during the first fourteen months of its existence and Markham for the Municipality. 2.Others have suggested that another Lodge existed in this area prior to Markham Union and that the word ‘ Union’ indicates a joining or amalgamation of Lodges. 3. The word ‘Union’ may simply indicate a uniting or joining together of men with similar beliefs and ideals.
